NEW BRITAIN — A business leader with a reputation for community work has been elected treasurer of the board of directors of American Savings Foundation.

Greg Howey, a New Britain resident and chairman of OKAY Industries, has been a board member of the foundation for 12 years. With a contributions budget of more than $3 million this year, the foundation provides grants to local nonprofits and college scholarships to area students.

“We’re fortunate to be able to rely on Greg’s knowledge of the local nonprofit scene, and his overall business experience and good judgment,” foundation Chairman Harry Mazadoorian said.

Howey said he remains committed to foundation work because of the effect of its grants and scholarships, especially in New Britain.

As foundation treasurer, Howey’s responsibilities include chairing the committee that oversees its $80 million endowment. He serves as a co-chairman of New Britain’s Work Plan to End Homelessness and participates in creating jobs for homeless individuals. He’s also a director of the Center for Special Care and the Hospital for Special Care community services boards. A past recipient of the New Britain Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Community Service Award, he received the Community Service Award from the United Way of Central and Southeast Connecticut.

OKAY, a New Britain-based manufacturing firm, specializes in metal stampings, automated mechanical and welded assemblies and surgical blades and scissors.

American Savings Foundation, founded in 1995, is an independent charitable endowment dedicated to strengthening the community by supporting education, human services, and the arts.
