Dr. Marie Gustin’s vision for annual nursing conference in city continues to be realized

A conference designed to encourage, educate, and inspire nurses and those entering the profession will be held at longtime Chamber member Hospital for Special Care on Monday.

The event is the third annual Dr. Marie S. Gustin Nursing Excellence Conference. This year it is entitled, “Leveraging Your Leadership Potential: Finding the Balance to Influence Others.

Both the Hospital of Central Connecticut and CCSU, two other longtime Chamber members are involved in the event.

But the real impetus behind it is Dr. Marie S. Gustin, a close friend and supporter of the New Britain Chamber, and the former superintendent of schools in New Britain.

Several years ago, she created an endowment fund to sponsor this lecture series each year. Part of a very close knit family, Dr. Gustin wanted to create a living event that would honor the memory and legacy of her parents, lifelong New Britain residents, Susie and Charles Gustin.

Now in its third year, the annual conference has grown beyond her most ambitious hopes and has become an important date on the calendar of nurses in Central Connecticut.

Dr. Gustin, a longtime benefactor or of both hospitals said that this year’s speaker, Dr. Millie Greenough, a clinical instructor in psychology at Yale will be talking about the importance of leadership.

Dr. Gustin told the Chamber that about 150 nurses have already registered but if there are nurses interested, there will always be room available. More information and reservations may be obtained by contacting Hospital for Special Care at 860-827-1958, ext. 5792 or the website at
