Day of Honor for Orchards’ Resident, Lloyd Sherwood

Sometimes, it’s just in your character to “step up to the plate.” Orchards at Southington resident, Lloyd Sherwood, has always done just that.  After joining the Army Reserves in 1948, Lloyd went on to full active duty as a member of the D Battery, 514th AAA Battalion out of Massachusetts in 1951, serving in the Korean War during the 50’s. Although he was discharged from active duty in 1955, service to his country was deep in his heart so after a brief respite, Lloyd joined the Massachusetts National Guard.

Even though Lloyd was eligible for the Good Conduct Medal upon his military discharge, he did not receive it as he was at a military hospital at the time. After 25 years, and with the assistance of Congressman, John Larson, Lloyd was finally presented with the Good Conduct Medal at a ceremony at The Orchards on November 21st.  In proud attendance were 75 Orchards’ residents, staff, family and friends to witness Congressman Larson personally present the Good Conduct Medal to Lloyd along with Representative Zeke Zaleski.

In addition, Lloyd is the recipient of a number of other awards, including:

·         Army Service Ribbon

·         Humanitarian Service Ribbon

·         Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Service Stars

·         United Nations Service Medal

·         National Defense Service Medal

·         Combat Infantry Badge

·         Bronze Star Medal

·         Army National Guard Recruiter Badge

·         Massachusetts Five-Year Service Medal with Silver Star

·         Massachusetts Emergency Service Ribbon

·         Massachusetts Service Medal

·         Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal

·         Armed Forces Reserve Medal

·         Noncommissioned Professional Development Ribbon

In a myriad of ways, Lloyd continues to shine at The Orchards at Southington. He initiated and organized The Orchards Veterans group, calls BINGO for the residents four times a week, is a member of the Orchards choral group and bowling team, and is an active member of the American Legion Post in Southington.

It is with great pride and affection that we were able to share in the Medal presentation ceremony for Lloyd Sherwood and genuinely grateful to both Congressman Larson and Representative Zaleski for personally being part of awarding this honor.
